Fifty UK Forties for Darrell Peck

Posted by: Trakker on November 19th, 2015

Not content with nearly breaking the internet last month after his epic Orient session was cut short by a spot of arson, Darrell Peck has gone and hit the headlines again within the space of a month, by bagging his fiftieth 40lb+ UK carp!

Whilst we were out at the Orient with Pecky, we got to ask him about his angling plans for when he returned to the UK. It transpired that Darrell had commitments for Korda, who were planning on taking the Chelmsford ace to Japan to do some filming for the forthcoming mainstream TV show that will replace the Thinking Tackle format, only a week after he returned fromFrance. Darrell told us “I’ve spent a fair bit of time away from home this year, not just the six weeks I’ve spent here in France, but I’ve filmed for Korda in Holland, Belgium, and now I’ve got Japan coming up. I think after that I’ll be sticking to fishing shorter sessions on a couple of waters closer to home, doing a bit of decorating around the house I moved into recently, and generally getting some brownie points!”

Ali Hamidi and Darrell with a lovely brace of commons from their Japanese adventure.

After returning from Japan, where Darrell, Ali Hamidi and Tom Dove caught carp from a variety of stunning waters, Darrell decided to tackle the Bayswater syndicate in Essex during the first week of November, and got off to a good start, landing carp of 26lb, 36lb, and 42b 4oz on his second session! The largest of the trio being a carp named Blackspot, which, incidentally, was his fiftieth 40 from a UK water.

Bayswater’s ‘Blackspot’. At 42b 4oz it was Pecky’s 50th 40-pounder from a UK water.

It has taken Darrell just over 12-years to achieve such an impressive record, with the first 40 to fall to his rods coming in the September of 2003. That fish was Chunky, at 43b 9oz, from the notoriously difficult Yately Car Park Lake, “with Terry Hearn watching from the next swim” – a capture that Darrell has previously credited with getting him noticed and kick-starting his career as an angler.

Yateley Car Park Lake’s ‘Chunky’ was Pecky’s first 40 back in 2003 – shown here in the pages of Darrell’s 2011 book ‘My Misspent Youth’, which is available from Angling Publications.

Darrell is set to join us at the Carp Society Winter Show, Sat 28th and Sun 29th November, so if there’s anything you’ve ever wanted to ask him, from tips for maximising your catches at your local day-ticket water, to advice on taking on a challenging new water, then pop along to the Trakker stand and ask away!
