Gary Hood

Team Trakker

Gary got into angling at a late age when compared to most of his peers, when a graphic design job he applied for in the local paper not long after leaving Coventry University, saw him by chance working at David Hall Publishing, the publishers of many top angling magazines, including Total Carp Fishing and Advanced Carp Fishing. Surrounded daily with images of fiery sunsets, misty dawns, mirror-like pools and scaly beasts, Gaz decided to get a bit of gear together and join a couple of old friends who’d already been bitten by the angling bug, and had been night-fishing fairly regularly for a few years already.

Despite catching a couple of small carp and the odd tench and bream during that, and a couple of subsequent outings, it wasn’t until a few months later when joining a friend for a chance winter afternoon session on a small club lake, that the fire was really ignited in Gaz where angling was concerned. The lake held a large head of carp around the 7-10lb mark, so both lads were taken aback when a ‘massive’ common of 18lb took interest in Gaz’s margin-fished Peparami hookbait, before tearing around the lake and giving the sort of adrenalin-fuelled fight that, once in the net, would leave him with no doubt that this was something he wanted to experience more often.

Gaz went on to work for Angling Publications, the publishers of Carpworld and Crafty Carper magazines, furthering his interest in carp angling, and introducing him to a number of people who have inspired or influenced him some way in his own angling, many of which becoming great friends along the way.

Now working as Trakker’s Media Manager, Gaz has fished a variety of waters across the UK, catching mirrors to 36lb 12oz, and commons to 27lb 4oz (with the occasional European trip thrown in too), and lists amongst his favourites: Birch Grove in Shropshire, Greenacres in Cambridgeshire, Burghfield Blue Pool, and a small but captivating little-known water in the Midlands.

Away from angling, Gaz and his wife Emma have two young children, and weekends and holidays are generally spent entertaining and attempting to exhaust their offspring, be it walks in the woods with their dog Elvis, afternoons at the park, or a day at a gymkhana. Gaz’s other hobbies include beard-cultivation and worrying.
